Is duck meat good for dogs?
Duck is not a terribly common ingredient in most dog foods, which makes it a great choice for those seeking a protein their allergic dog has never eaten. Additionally, most dogs find duck to be as irresistibly delicious as many people do.
If your dog is allergic to beef or chicken then duck can be a great alternative to the more traditional meats. Duck meat in dog food is great way for tackling food sensitivities and allergies. It offers an abundance of protein to help alleviate any gastrointestinal issues or skin irritations.
Duck is a great tasting animal protein source that also provides a number of important nutrients that contribute to overall health and well-being.
Things to look for in Duck dog food
Below is a list of things to check when choosing a food for your pup. Its always best to compare the characteristics and ingredients which is why at Moorishly Pet Dog Food we always supply all the constituents of our great tasting pet food range.
High quality dog foods usually list the main protein first. The best duck based dog foods should list duck as the first ingredient, rather than fillers like corn or wheat. Many products that don’t list the protein, like duck, first usually don’t have any fresh, whole duck at all.
The best dog foods leave out artificial colours and flavours. All our Moorishly Dog food has No Added Artificial Colours & Preservatives. These types of added flavours or colouring in not only unnecessary but they can also lead to food allergies and other health problems. Real duck makes the food super tasty and as much as you care about what you eat, your dog will enjoy a natural flavour and texture better than enjoying the colour.

Switching your dog’s food
Some dogs have great constitution and switching their foods from one to another can be simple. However, other dogs may suffer from digestive upset if forced to make an abrupt change.
We always suggest that it is wise to switch your dog’s food gradually to help give their systems time to adjust to the new food.
The best way to do this is to mix a little in at a time over the course of a few days until they have adjusted to the new food and phased out the old food.
It is recommended to do this in the following splits.
- 10% New – 90% Old
- 20% New – 80% Old
- 30% New – 70% Old
- 40% New – 60% Old
- 50% New – 50% Old
and so on until you have completely changed over.
The entire process is likely to take around 5-10 days, although some dogs will adjust quicker, but you can adjust to your pups needs.
If you notice that your pups poops aren’t as firm as they should be slow done the process until they are back to their normal state.
